Faced with the difficult task of playing the No. 2-seeded doubles team in the opening round at the NCAA Division III women’s tennis national championships, Chapman University sophomores Liz Lewis and Kelley Fox gave the heavily-favored Tufts University (Mass.) duo all it could handle before succumbing to elimination on Friday afternoon in Lawrenceville, Ga.

NCAA women's draws: An underdog and a rematch

The NCAA Division III women’s tennis championships committee has announced the singles and doubles draws for the finals tournaments which begin on Friday at the Collins Athletic Club. Chapman University doubles’ team of sophomores Kelley Fox and Liz Lewis will be underdogs right out of the gate as they must face the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Julie Browne and Meghan McCooey from Tufts University (Mass.) at 3 p.m. (EDT) on Friday.

Follow Chapman University All-America sophomores Liz Lewis and Kelley Fox as they compete for the NCAA Division III doubles championship from Collins Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Lewis is also competing as one of 32 individuals for the singles title. Draws will be announced on Thursday afternoon.

Chapman falls to No. 8 Redlands in second round

The University of Redlands women’s tennis team earned a sweep of all three doubles matches on its way to a 5-0 victory over Chapman University in the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s tennis team championships at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday. As a result, the Panthers were eliminated from team competition ending a season in which they were ranked in the top-25 in the nation all year long.

Not since the glory days of Chapman University Tennis in the 1980s (known as Chapman College then), have the Panthers been this well-represented at the NCAA national championships. Three Panthers have been selected to participate in the NCAA Division III men’s and women’s singles and doubles championships upcoming later this month.

The Chapman University women’s tennis team has been selected to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships tournament for the third consecutive year. The Panthers, ranked No. 24 in the nation, have earned a first round bye, but will be underdogs against No. 8 University of Redlands. The second round match will be played on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

The Panthers’ championship hopes in Ojai came to an end on Saturday halting a run that saw Chapman University’s No. 1 singles players Liz Lewis and Clifford Yook each reach the quarterfinals in their respective brackets, as well as the Panthers’ women’s doubles of Lewis and Kelley Fox advancing to the semifinals.

The West Region’s No. 3-ranked doubles team of Liz Lewis and Kelley Fox advanced to the semifinal round of the Independent Colleges doubles bracket at the 109th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Chapman University duo, seeded No. 8 in the tournament, earned a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) victory over No. 3 seed Marcela Montanha and Dunya Wren of Cal Baptist University to advance to the Final Four on Saturday.

Chapman University’s men’s and women’s tennis programs will be well-represented once again when the 109th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament kicks off on Thursday in Ojai. For the Chapman women, ranked No. 4 in the West Region and No. 25 in Division III, it is expected to serve as a primer for the NCAA postseason. For some Panthers, it may be the tournament to make or break their playoff hopes.

It has been a good week for the Chapman University women’s tennis team. After dropping three consecutive matches to ranked opponents, the Panthers have bounced back to win three in a row, including victories over No. 25 Skidmore (Pa.) on Wednesday and Texas-Tyler on Thursday.
