Chapman's Hadzinsky named Independents Student-Athlete of the Year

Chapman Universitys Tyler Hadzinsky has been named Male Student-Athlete of the Year by the Association of Division III Independents for the 2008-09 academic year. Only a sophomore, he was named to the All-Independents teams in both soccer (first team) and baseball (third team) last year, including being named Goalkeeper of the Year as the Panthers starter.

It's becoming an annual occurance at Chapman - every June to be exact. Chapman University OF John Semel has been selected by the New York Mets in the 26th round of Major League Baseballs 2009 First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon, the second day of the draft. The All-America sophomore was the 794th pick overall and becomes the ninth Panther since 1999 to be selected by an MLB organization.

Having already been honored by D3Baseball.com as an All-America selection, Chapman University sophomore OF/P John Semel has also been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America team for the 2009 season. Semel was named to the second team utility position for his prowess in the lineup and on the mound.

Three Chapman University baseball players have been named to the All-West Region team, as selected by the American Baseball Coaches Assocation (ABCA). Sophomore OF/P John Semel, who was named to the first team, headlines the Panthers honorees. Chapman head coach Tom Tereschuk was also named West Region Coach of the Year for the fifth straight year and sixth time overall.

The Chapman University baseball season came to an end with an 11-7 defeat at the hands of the College of Wooster (Ohio) at the NCAA Division III championships at Fox Cities Stadium on Monday. The Panthers earned third place at the finals for the second time in the past four years.

As hot as the Panthers coming into the NCAA Division III baseball championships on Friday, it didnt take long for St. Thomas University (Minn.) to cool them down. The Tommies, ranked No. 18 in Division III, scored first and cruised to a 9-1 over Chapman University at Time Warner Field at Fox Cities Stadium in the first round of the finals.

Chapman University RHP Wayde Kitchens and two of his teammates have been named to the D3Baseball.com All-America team for the 2009 season. The senior becomes the first baseball player in school history to earn All-America honors in three different seasons.

Tyler Hadzinsky already has 16 doubles this season for the Chapman University baseball team, but his most recent two-bagger may be the most special. The Panther sophomore second baseman has been named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII baseball team just months after earning the same award as a goalkeeper for Chapmans mens soccer last fall.

The long and sometimes turbulent 40-game regular season for the 2009 Chapman University baseball team one in which the Panthers wondered if they would even make the playoffs seems like a distant memory now. The No. 5-seeded Panthers eliminated top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges with a 5-2 victory at Roy Helser Field on Saturday night and are now just one win away from their fifth straight NCAA Division III West Region crown.

Perhaps motivated by a rare underdog label and No. 5 seed in the six-team NCAA Division III West Region playoffs, the Chapman University baseball team made one thing clear on Thursday: the road to the regional championship still goes through the Panthers. Chapman exploded for six runs in the second and led 14-1 after four innings on its way to a 16-2 win over No. 2 Texas-Tyler in the first round of the regional tournament at Roy Hesler Field.
