The Chapman University softball team split a doubleheader, 3-1 and 4-2, in the 2023 season-opener. After dropping the first game, Jillian Kelly took a perfect game into the fifth inning to lead the Panthers to a win in the late game.
The defending SCIAC Tournament champions have been picked to top the 2023 SCIAC standings in a preseason poll of the conference. The Chapman University softball team received six of the eight first place votes to top the poll.
The Chapman University softball team was equally as impressive in the classroom as it was on the field in 2021-22. The Panthers ended the season ranked 26th in the NCAA Division III for GPA and had 21 student-athletes earn academic recognition.
Chapman University student-athletes set a new school record with 281 individuals earning SCIAC All-Academic recognition. The 281 individuals to earn the annual academic recognition are 22 more than year’s record-breaking number. The SCIAC annually recognizes student-athletes who have been at their institution for at least one academic year and finished the school year with a 3.4 cumulative GPA or better.

Cole Kershner
Cole anchored the 400 free relay with the fastest split in the SCIAC this year and nearly brought the win for Chapman. He also helped the Panthers tally some points as he swept the individual sprint freestyle events. He won the 50 free with a 21.26 and captured the event victory in the 100 free with a 47.47.
