Strong start not enough for women's basketball against Leopards

The Panthers jumped out to a commanding seven point lead early, after shooting 64% from the field in the opening frame. The 21-14 advantage was quickly hit with an 11-0 Leopard run to close out the quarter.

The Panthers trailed 36-27 with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter after a 13-2 run that started at the end of the second quarter and carried into the beginning of the third. Chapman called a time out, regrouped, and went on a run of its own, cutting the deficit to four.
Strand captures another SCIAC weekly award

Julia Strand scored 31 points to lift the Chapman University women’s basketball team to a 69-64 win over No. 6 Amherst. The loss was just the second of the season for Amherst with the Mammoths' only other loss coming in double overtime.

With :31 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Strand got the ball at the block and hit the defender with a smooth turn-around jumper to net her 14th point of the game and 1,001st of her career. The bucket cut the Chapman deficit to just five heading into the fourth quarter, 44-39.

The game was consistently back-and-forth, with the Panthers controlling the score for the majority of the contest, even leading 40-32 with 5:58 left in the third quarter. At that point the Panthers were coming off the heels of an 8-2 run to grow to their largest lead of the night.
Strand named SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week

Strand collected nine steals and three blocks on the week. Her six steals in the Panthers’ 57-45 win over reigning SCIAC champ Whittier on Sunday tied her career high. She also tallied all three blocks, tying another career high, against No. 23 Whitman. She added a double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Whitman.
