San Marcos takes season-series with 7-3 win

ORANGE, Calif. – From start to finish, the Chapman University baseball team trailed, as Cal State San Marcos won the season-series with a 7-3 victory on Friday afternoon at Hart Park. San Marcos also defeated Chapman at Hart Park in March.

After three-consecutive singles in the first inning, San Marcos (30-13-1) got on the board with a sacrifice fly by junior IF Ryle Parks off of Chapman starter Jordan Sigman. This marked the third-straight loss for Sigman who began the season 6-1.

San Marcos then added a pair of runs in the third inning on a RBI groundout by junior OF Kevin Silvett and a run-scoring single by senior DH Josh Miller, pushing their lead to 3-0. With Sigman out of the game, the Cougars added a run in the fifth inning off of freshman reliever Christian Maietta and another in the seventh off of freshman Kevin Osaki.

With San Marcos’ starting pitcher Kyle Smart out of the game in the seventh inning, Chapman got its first run of the game. After senior OF Ryan Hall led off the inning with a single, senior IF Ryan Prechtl came up with a RBI double to right-centerfield scoring Hall from first base. Smart pitched five scoreless innings for the Cougars while allowing five hits. Hall was 2-for-3 on the afternoon for the Panthers.

Chapman (24-8) loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning on a single by senior C Matt Gomez, walk by Hall and another single by Prechtl. The Panthers however were only able to get two runs across - one on a sacrifice fly by junior IF Tyler Hadzinsky and the other on an error - as the rally fell short.

Making his first career start was freshman DH Michael Newman who went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of singles.
