ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 17-ranked Chapman University baseball team swept a pair of games from visiting Wabash College (Ind.) on Sunday to complete the three-game series sweep and run its winning streak to nine games. The Panthers needed extra-innings for a 6-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader and then shutout the Little Giants in the nightcap, 6-0.
Game 1: Chapman 6, Wabash 5 (10 inn.)
A one-out, bases-loaded single by freshman DH Adam Velez snapped a 5-5 tie and gave Chapman (10-4) a walk-off victory in the bottom of the 10th inning. The walk-off made a winner out of sophomore RHP Kyle Tachibana who retired all four batters he faced in relief for his first career win.
Wabash (2-5) never led, but rallied from 4-0 and 5-4 deficits to send the game into extra-innings, including a run in the ninth.
Chapman jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a three-run third inning. Sophomore OF James Parr and freshman IF Mark Saatzer each had RBI singles in the inning. Saatzer and Velez each had a pair of hits to lead Chapman offensively. Leadoff man Parr reached base three times, including a pair of walks and scored twice.
Game 2: Chapman 6, Wabash 0
Senior RHP Jordan Sigman tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters on the way to his second win of the year. The win is Sigman's 29th of his career, one shy of tying Chapman's Division III record for victories.
The Panthers' pitching staff shutout the Little Giants on just four hits total and allowed just seven baserunners in the game.
Sophomore OF Chuck Piro slugged a two-run homer in the third inning and finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs. Velez also collected three hits as the Panthers finished with a season-high 15 hits in the game.
