Bruins take series finale in 13-5 win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team committed eight errors which led to six unearned runs and visiting George Fox University added an eight-run seventh inning to take the rubber match of the weekend series 13-5 at Hart Park on Sunday afternoon.

Leading 4-3 in the seventh, George Fox (4-8) sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs (seven earned) to take a commanding 12-3 lead. The Bruins had five hits, including a two-run single from 1B Danny Clifford, but also capitalized on three walks and a hit batter in the inning.

Chapman junior RHP Kevin Osaki started promisingly, holding George Fox hitless through the first three innings while striking out five batters. However, he failed to record an out in the fourth and the Panthers' defense committed three errors and a passed ball in the inning in giving up a pair of unearned runs. Osaki (0-1) was saddled with the loss as a result.

George Fox extended its lead to 4-0 with single unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings off Panthers' reliever sophomore RHP Justin Hanks who struck out three batters in two and two-thirds innings.

The Panthers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the Bruins lead to one. Sophomore SS Troy Newman and junior OF James Parr led off with back-to-back singles. They would both come around to score on RBIs by senior DH Steve Greenberg and junior 3B Tyler Surnbrock. Sophomore C Charlie James followed with a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring in the inning.

That knocked Bruins' starter RHP Tom Zarosinski (1-0) out of the game, however he earned the victory after allowing just one earned run over five-plus innings.

Parr led Chapman (5-5) with three hits in the game. Sophomore 1B Mark Saatzer and Newman each had a pair of hits and Newman scored two runs. Chapman and George Fox were equal in the hit column with 10 hits apiece.

For George Fox, C Josh Rapacz was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Chapman travels to San Antonio, Texas next to face Trinity University in a three-game series March 2-4.
