D3 Week Profile: Mark Saatzer, Baseball

ORANGE, Calif.- In honor of Division III Week April 8-14, Chapman University is celebrating a handful of its outstanding student-athletes that represent the spirit of Division III athletics at its core. These dedicated students have excelled as Panthers both on the field of competition as well as amongst the elite in the classroom and in the community at large.

Typical student-athletes limit themselves to their sport, their classes, and not much more. First baseman Mark Saatzer made sure to make the most of his college experience by moving towards the career he wants while developing himself as a leader.

"D3 was the perfect opportunity for me to get an outstanding education while also playing the game I love," said Saatzer.

The biological sciences major is a recognized leader off the field as he is actively involved in several clubs. As a member of the University Honors Program, he is able to build leadership skills through courses outside of his major and general education requirements. In addition, Saatzer has established himself as a leader in Chapman Greek Life as a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he has served on the executive board twice. As vice president of academics, he led the chapter to the second best GPA amongst all Greek houses.

The three-year starter and 2011 Division III All-Independent first team member also volunteers weekly at the Children's Hospital of Orange County in Seacrest Studios, where he works with patients in recreational activities that are linked to child-focused radio programs.

"I figure you are only in college once, why take any time off," Saatzer stated when asked about his busy schedule. "Do as much as you can, make sure every day is filled with something that will make you better, and just keep going."

The Glendale, Calif. native is juggling it all just fine this season, owning a .350 batting average while leading the team with 16 RBI and a .485 slugging percentage.

As he decides on what type of medical practice to focus on, Saatzer will take what he has learned from his various involvements while balancing Division III baseball.

"The self-discipline I am learning through all of this is definitely the most valuable lesson I have learned at Chapman. It has made me into who I want to be."
