Riddle's shutout effort earns SCIAC honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University freshman RHP Braden Riddle was named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week last week for his performance during the period of April 1-7. The rookie tossed 10 shutout innings to defeat Hardin-Simmons University as the Panthers won 1-0 in Abeline, Texas.

The freshman workhorse delivered an unforgettable performance, blanking the Cowboys over 10 innings in the Panthers' 1-0 win. In his first career shutout, the right-hander threw 147 pitches, allowing just six hits while walking three and striking out 10.

The performance also marked the first 10-inning shutout thrown by a Panther in the school's Division III history. The last Chapman pitcher to toss 10 innings in a game was Buddy Klovstad in a 3-1 win over Cal Lutheran in 2005.

It was Riddle's second complete game of the season and the first shutout thrown by a Panther this season. As of last week, Riddle led the SCIAC with 66 innings pitched and his 2.45 ERA was fifth best among SCIAC starters.

Riddle becomes the seventh Chapman athlete to earn SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors during this academic year, the Panthers' first full season as a member of the conference.
