Baseball rolls past Whitworth

Orange, Calif. – The Chapman University (2-1, 0-0 SCIAC) baseball team rolled past the visiting Whitworth University Pirates (1-10, 0-0 NWC) in a 12-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Max Banks made an impressive collegiate debut, striking out 11 batters in just five innings pitched. The rookie allowed one hit and walked just one in the win.

After a scoreless first, Chapman got on the board in the second with an RBI from sophomore AJ Anzai. Senior Cooper Foard followed suit in the third, doubling in a run. Junior Davis Mieliwocki knocked in his first two runs with a two-run homer at the next at-bat, putting the Panthers up 4-0 early.

A Mieliwocki sac fly and an RBI from freshman Josh Phillips put Chapman up by six, but the Pirates put up a few runs in the sixth and seventh to bring the score within four. The Panthers answered with a dominant six-run eighth inning to take their final 12-3 lead.

Anzai put up a couple of RBIs with a single to right field, followed by a single that knocked in one run from junior Cole Minato. A couple of wild pitches from Pirates' freshman pitcher Mason Greene drove in two runs and Mieliwocki finished off the inning with an RBI double.

Junior Dylan Holt and sophomore Brandon Menzel each recorded a strikeout in their first appearances of 2022.

The Panthers return to Hart Park on Friday, Feb. 25 to host George Fox University in the first of a three-game series at 3 p.m.
