Phillips' homer not enough against Kingsmen

ORANGE, Calif — Another quality start from Max Banks and a bomb from Josh Phillips were not enough to top the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen on Friday, Mar. 18, as Chapman fell 6-3 in the non-conference matchup.

Banks pitched four scoreless innings and was on a roll heading into the fifth. The Panthers led 1-0 at the time, via a Drew Littwin single that drove in Nick Kondo who had reached on a two-out double the at bat before.

As Banks entered his fifth inning of work, he ran into a little trouble, but worked out of it allowing three runs.

No fear however, as Chapman came to bat and immediately answered back. The red hot Oli Sellman smacked a lead off single into right — he ended the game with his season batting average at .516, bringing Phillips to the dish. Phillips hit a towering drive off of a first pitch fastball over the high-walled, 356 foot wall in left field — his fourth of the season.

With the score tied at three, Head Coach Scott Laverty called Hank Tobias in from the bullpen. He tossed two scoreless innings, then was pulled after giving up a pair of hits in the eighth — which led to the eventual Kingsmen game winning run.

With the loss, the Panthers fell to 11-4. The Kingsmen improved to 14-4.

Chapman will take the field at Hart Park on Sunday to take on Carleton at 1 p.m.
