Chapman Football Game Notes (10/16/10)

Last Week vs. Claremont
The undefeated Stags jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back as they went on to defeat Chapman 31-21. The loss ended Chapman's three-game winning streak against Claremont but Chapman still leads the all-time series 5-2. Claremont capitalized on four Chapman tournovers (two of which came inside the red zone) and rolled up 300 rushing yards to get the win, dropping Chapman to 1-3.

Breakout Game for Lambesis, White, Mehlhaff
Despite the loss to Claremont, there were some bright spots for the Panthers as senior WR Mike Lambesis, junior RB Al White and sophomore LB Michael Mehlhaff all had career games. Lambesis had two touchdowns and 71 yards receiving while White finished with 83 yards rushing on 13 carries and Mehlhaff had 10 tackles, twice as many tackles as he had in the previous three games combined. Junior QB Brett Visciglia threw a career-high two touchdowns but also had an interception.

Lloyd Eclipses 1,000 Career Rushing Yards
Senior RB Akio Lloyd had 23 rushing yards against Claremont giving him 1,020 for his career. He is just the sixth Chapman player to reach 1,000 career rushing yards. The last Chapman player to reach 1,000 career rushing yards was Mike Christensen who had 1,001.

Adranly Movin' on Up; Now No. 6 Nationally
Junior P Jimmy Adranly punted four times last week - all good ones - his best being a 53-yard punt which ended up being two yards shy of his career high. One punt landed inside the opponents' 20-yard line and the four kicks averaged 43 yards. Adrany's season average is 42.8 yards per punt, currently ranking No. 6 in all of Division III. Andrew Dejong of Allegheny leads the nation averaging 45.7 yards.

Consistency in the Run Game
The Panthers have had 100 yards or more rushing in each of the last three games. The last time that Chapman had three or more 100-yard running games in a row was in 2008 when they started the season with five consecutive 100-plus yard games. Chapman has totaled 499 rushing yards on the season while averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Of the team's 12 offensive touchdowns, six have come on the ground.

Struggles When Scoring First
Traditionally, it is important to score first against an opponent. The Panthers may not agree with that theory in 2010 as they are 0-2 in games when they score first. Against Menlo and Azusa Pacific, the Panthers got on the board first only to end up losing.

Shaking Off the Rust
A year away certainly hasn't slowed senior DL Bob Burton's ability to get behind the line of scrimmage. The fifth-year senior who took the 2009 season off to focus on his film studies, leads the Panthers with 5.5 tackles for loss totaling 22 yards. That puts Burton into a tie for sixth in Chapman history with 22 tackles for loss in his career. Burton also has a sack and a team-high six QB hurries in the first four games this season.

Panthers Visit Orange County Children's Hospital
A group of 14 Chapman football players including White, Burton and senior DB Jake Fey  visited the Children's Hospital Orange County on Monday. The players visited, read to and played games with patients whose ailments range from leukemia to asthma. The football team plans to make another visit in December for the Holidays.

Chapman vs. Whittier
Chapman is 10-3 all-time against Whittier despite having lost last year's matchup 21-6 in the Panthers' homecoming game. The Panthers started the series by winning seven of the first eight games but Whittier has made the series more competitive of last winning two of the last five games. This week Chapman will try to return the favor and spoil the Poets' homecoming.

Whittier in 2010
The Poets enter Saturday's game at 1-3 and having lost two in a row. Their only win was a 42-39 victory over the University of Puget Sound in six overtimes on Sept. 25. The game vs. UPS marked the longest game in Whittier history. In that game Whittier ran for 361 yards.

Scouting the Poets
The Poets rely primarily on their running attack which could be a problem for Chapman whose rush defense ranks 214th out of 236 Division III teams. The Poets are averaging 212 rushing yards. Whittier's leading rusher is sophomore RB Kimble Tillman who averages 141 yards. Their other top weapon is dual-threat QB Alesana Sausau who has struggled so far in 2010. Last season vs. Chapman however, Sausau picked apart the defense finishing 14-of-18 passing for 157 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 52 yards and another score.
