Chapman Football Pregame Notes (11/2/13)

ORANGE, Calif. - Pregame notes for the football game between Chapman University (5-1, 3-1 SCIAC) at host University of La Verne (3-3, 2-2 SCIAC) on Saturday afternoon are now available. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m. at Ortmeyer Stadium.

  • Rebounding from a loss is something Chapman has done well over the past two years as the Panthers are 4-0 following their last four losses. The last time Chapman lost back-to-back games was the end of the 2011 season when it lost four straight.
  • Chapman still ranks in the top-10 in Division III in several offensive categories, including scoring (6th), passing efficiency (7th) and red zone efficiency (1st). The Panthers also lead the SCIAC in rushing offense and defense, pass sacks and tackles for loss.
  • Junior K Markus Trujillo is one of 28 players in the nation who has yet to miss a field goal attempt, going a perfect 4-for-4 this season. His longest - a 40-yarder - came against Whittier on homecoming. Trujillo leads the Panthers in scoring with 39 points and ranks No. 3 in the SCIAC.
  • Special teams has been another bright spot for Chapman in 2013 with junior Kean Stancil ranking sixth in Division III in kick returns (33.5 yds/ret.) and junior Blayr Jimmerson ranking No. 17 in punt returns (12.2 yds/ret.).
  • The Panther-Leopard rivalry goes back 19 years and while La Verne won nine of the first 12 meetings, Chapman only trails in the all-time series 10-9. From 1994-03, eight games were decided by five points or less and six of those games were decided by less than a field goal.
  • The last time Chapman visited La Verne in 2011 it boasted a 4-1 record and, on paper, was the favorite to beat the Leos. Instead, the Panthers were thumped 30-21 starting a four-game losing streak. Chapman won handily 38-12 in Orange last year.
