Costly turnovers spoil Homecoming

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University football team fell 35-7 to visiting Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. Five turnovers proved to be too much of an obstacle to overcome for the Panthers (1-2, 0-1 SCIAC).

Pomona-Pitzer (2-1, 1-0 SCIAC) hauled in five interceptions and turned two into touchdowns to secure the victory. The Sagehens' offense also outgained Chapman's 495-362.

The Sagehens struck first with a 12-play, 85-yard drive on their second possession. Edward Sias found Luke Lowell for a 10-yard score. Chapman answered right back, covering all of the 52 yards on its next drive on one play.

A double reverse ended up in the hands of junior Ian Craddock. Craddock lofted a pass up for junior Jacob Isabel, who grabbed the pass over a defender and sprinted the final 10 yards into the end zone to tie the game.

Another methodical drive regained the lead for the Sagehens as Sias' 11-yard touchdown run capped a six play drive that covered 70 yards. The Panthers next two drives ended abruptly as Pomona-Pitzer grabbed its first two picks, including one deep in its own territory.

The ensuing 89-yard drive finished in the end zone and gave Pomona-Pitzer a 21-7 lead, which turned into 28-7 before halftime. Sias finished with 289 yards passing and completed 19-of-28 passes with a pair of TDs. He ran for one more and Karter Odermann ran for another.

Junior Joe Mudie had 109 yards rushing to lead the Panther offense. Senior Ethan Weinstein had five catches for 71 yards while Isabel had three catches for 74 yards.

The Sagehen defense continued to force the Panthers into turnovers in the second half as it ended three Chapman drives in a row with interceptions. Odermann's one yard TD in the fourth quarter provided the last score of the night.

Chapman is on the road for the next two weeks at Whittier and Redlands but returns home on Oct. 22 to take on La Verne.
