Ramme, Kaiser lead Chapman to 78-44 win over Southwestern

ORANGE, Calif. - After a slow first half start, the No. 11 Chapman University men's basketball team ran away with a 78-44 win over Southwestern College on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center, extending their winning streak to nine.

The Panthers were held without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the game as they struggled to get quality shots against the Eagles' match-up zone defense. Trailing 11-8, Chapman junior G Griffin Ramme broke the field-goal drought with a three-pointer which tied the score at 11-11.

After a Southwestern (2-18) free throw by freshman F A.J. Koch, Ramme gave Chapman a 14-12 lead with his second consecutive three-pointer. Koch kept the game close for the Eagles during the first 10 minutes of the half with a pair of three-pointers as he scored six of his team-high 12 points during that span.

Chapman (19-2) closed out the final 10 minutes of the first half on a 20-5 as they built a 31-17 halftime lead. Senior C Jared Kaiser had 13 of his career-high 16 rebounds in the first half to go along with seven points. Ramme finished with a game-high 25 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting with 13 points in the first half.

Southwestern struggled to get anything going in the final 20 minutes as Chapman pushed its lead to as many as 34 points. Chapman reserves Brandon Lin and Max Piner contributed seven and six points, respectively, with Piner connecting on a pair of three-pointers in the second half.

Sophomore G Houston Friend and senior G Derek Gossard each finished with nine points for the Eagles.
