17-game winning streak ended by Claremont 57-56

ORANGE, Calif. - A put-back layup by Shane Davis with 17 seconds remaining gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a 57-56 upset-win over the No. 12 Chapman University men's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center, ending the Panthers 17-game win-streak. Chapman's last loss came on Jan. 24, 2009 to the University of Dallas 62-59.

Claremont (4-2) led for much of the game, building its lead to as many as 12 points with 7:48 remaining in the second half on a pair of free throws by Stags' sophomore F Joseph Anderson. With Claremont up 52-40, Chapman ran off eight-straight points to narrow the margin to 52-48. The Stags ended the run with a bucket by senior G Ben Bergsma pushing their lead back to six at 54-48.

Down by seven points, Chapman (7-1) answered with another 8-0 run, this time capped by a layup from junior F Justin Riley to take a 56-55 lead with 43 seconds remaining. Riley had 15 points along with a game-high 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Less than 30 seconds after Riley's layup, Davis hit the game-winner for Claremont, giving the Panthers their first loss of the season.

Davis had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with 5 rebounds for the Stags. Senior G Conner Faught had a team-high 15 points.

In the first half, the Panthers were held scoreless for the first few minutes as the Stags jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Riley got the Panthers' first basket on a put-back. Chapman took its first lead of the game at 22-20 on a basket by senior G Kyle Wood. With Chapman holding a 31-28 lead just before halftime, Bergsma scored a three-point play to even the score 31-31 sending the game into halftime tied. The last six minutes of the first half saw five ties and six lead-changes.

Wood had a game-high 17 points on 6-of-20 shooting for Chapman while junior G Griffin Ramme had 15 points, nine of which came in the first half.

Chapman was held to 33 percent shooting for the game and 13 percent from three-point range. Of the Panthers' 17 field goals, four came off of assists.
