Men's basketball to host Redlands in NCAA playoff showdown Thursday night

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second consecutive season the Chapman University men's basketball team is hosting an NCAA Division III Championships first round game. The NCAA announced the field of 61 teams this morning and Chapman is hosting Redlands at the Hutton Sports Center on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Chapman (24-3) is making its second NCAA Division III Championship appearance. The Panthers also hosted a first round game last season, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 58-47 before losing to Whitworth in the second round. The Panthers are currently riding an 11-game winning streak and are making just their second postseason appearance in the last 26 years. Chapman won the Division III Independent West Region Championship over the weekend defeating U.C. Santa Cruz and Dallas.

Redlands (16-11) is making its first NCAA postseason appearance since the 1984-85 season. The Bulldogs received an automatic bid to the Championships by winning the SCIAC postseason tournament this weekend. In the first round Redlands defeated Cal Lutheran 63-54 and then knocked off last season's champ - Claremont – in the championship game on Saturday night.

Chapman and Redlands have faced each other twice this season with the Panthers winning both games. Chapman defeated Redlands 78-67 on Nov. 20 and 70-57 on Dec. 4 in the Lee Fulmer Tournament.

The winner of Thursday's matchup will travel to Spokane, Wash for a game against No. 2 ranked Whitworth on Saturday night.
