Intercounty rival Vanguard bests Chapman 67-59

ORANGE, Calif. – Losing at home has not been common for the Chapman University men's basketball team, but it happened on Saturday night as the Panthers fell to intercounty rival Vanguard University 67-59 at the Hutton Sports Center. Chapman (3-3) entered the game having won 27 out of 29 on its home floor and the loss was its first at home this season.

The turning point of the game came in the second half with 9:08 to play after an 11-4 run by the Panthers which tied the game at 45. Vanguard senior G Taylor Kelly scored a three-pointer to take the lead and the Panthers were unable to catch up from there. Kelly finished with three three-pointers and a game-high 16 points.

Three-pointers also dictated the pace for Vanguard (7-4) early on as it started the game with four triples in the first 6:41 to build a 16-12 advantage. The Panthers allowed the Lions to shoot 41.2 percent from beyond the arc and 47 percent from field goal range.

The Panthers took their only lead of the game in the first half after an 11-0 run to jump ahead of the Lions 27-24 with 2:39 to play in the period. The lead was short-lived however, as Vanguard struck back to take a two-point lead into the break.

Chapman's offense was held in check throughout the game, shooting 39.6 percent and turning the ball over 20 times.

Three Panthers finished with 11 points: senior F Takeshi Clifford, sophomore G Taylor Hamasaki and sophomore G Jordan Young. Senior F Colin Chadwick added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The loss drops Chapman to 1-2 outside of SCIAC play as it enters a stretch of seven straight non-conference games. The Panthers will next welcome West Coast Baptist on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
