Nelsen leads Panthers to home win

ORANGE, Calif. – Sophomore Rob Nelsen led the Chapman University men's basketball team to its second win of the season in a 72-62 victory over Willamette University at the Hutton Sports Center on Friday night. The Panthers and Bearcats traded leads six times before the Panthers ran away with the win with Nelsen scoring 15 points for Chapman.  

Trailing 19-14 ten minutes into the first half, the Panthers turned their energy around with a three pointer by sophomore G Tyler Green and a fastbreak layup by sophomore F James Taylor. By the ten minute mark, Chapman had tied it up 29-29. Sophomore G Ben Cohen's layup at the 3:26 minute mark started 9-2 run for the Panthers to take the 37-31 lead heading into the first half.  

The Bearcats battled in the second half to earn a 17-13 run to tie up the game 50-50 at the ten minute mark. Less than a minute later, a layup by Green put the Panthers back on top 52-50. At the three minute mark a triple by Nelsen gave the Panthers a 58-55 lead to edge the Bearcats and solidify the win.

Cohen ranked second on the team in scoring, earning 11 points from off the bench. Junior Luke Hamlin led the Panthers in the front court collecting ten rebounds for the Panthers.

Chapman will travel to Hawaii for a pair of road games beginning with Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, Nov. 24. The Panthers will return home Jan. 2 for their first SCIAC game set for 2 p.m. against Whittier College.
