Panthers avenge early season loss to Oxy at home

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team avenged an early season loss to Occidental on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Tigers 65-53 at the Hutton Sports Center. The win extended Chapman's winning streak to six, improving the Panthers to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in SCIAC.

Tied 9-9 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, sophomore Tyler Green hit a three to spark a 10-3 run for the Panthers and give them a 19-12 lead. Chapman maintained a four point lead throughout the rest of the half with sophomore James Taylor hitting two jumpers and a layup to help the Panthers to a 28-20 lead by the 3:30 minute mark for their biggest lead of the half. The Panthers finished the first half leading 28-24.

Freshman Cam Haslam opened up the second half with a triple and a layup to start the Panthers on a 5-0 run. Green then hit a pair of triples to help the Panthers on an 11-3 run and pad Chapman's lead 44-31 at the 12:15 minute mark. Chapman maintained at least a 10 point lead through the rest of the game to earn the victory.

Haslam led the Panthers with a game-high 22 points alongside Taylor who posted 14. Senior Davis Dragovich dominated the boards with a career-high 12, including 11 defensive rebounds. Green scored 13 of the Panthers 15 points off of the bench.

Chapman hosts University of La Verne at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2 in a battle for first-place. The Leopards defeated the Panthers 70-69 on a buzzer-beater earlier this season.
