Foldes perfect 7-of-7 in Panthers’ fifth straight win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team (6-1) fought to a 93-80 win over the visiting West Coast Baptist Eagles (1-8) earlier this evening. Chapman had four different Panthers score in the double digits, led by sophomore Daniel Foldes, who went a perfect 7-of-7 from the field.

Foldes put up a career-high 14 points in the victory. He was joined in the double digits by sophomore Alex Rogat, who put up 11 points, and juniors Chandler White and Hayden Moore, who scored 16 and 18 points respectively.

White hit his first of four three-pointers early in the game to give the Panthers an 8-5 lead. The Eagles responded with back-to-back threes to take their own three-point lead just over a minute later. West Coast Baptist held a steady lead throughout the middle of the first half, never going up by more than four points.

With 6:49 left on the clock, Rogat made a layup to tie the game at 26-26. Moore gave Chapman the lead with a jumper, but Eagles' freshman Chris Lako responded with a three-pointer to regain the lead. On their next possession, White hit a shot from beyond the arc, swinging the lead in the Panthers' favor once again.

Rogat built on the lead with a layup, but Lako hit another one of his three three-pointers to pull the Eagles within one point with 4:16 left on the clock. After trading points for the next four minutes, Foldes tied the game at 41-41 on a layup. With the clock winding down, Foldes hit a jump shot to give Chapman the 43-41 advantage at the half.

White set the tone early in the second half, nailing a three-pointer just over 20 seconds in. The Panthers built on their lead, going up by nine points with just over 15 minutes left to play. Lako hit his third and final three pointer at the 14:33 mark to cut the deficit to 57-53, but Moore responded just 16 seconds later with his own three-pointer.

With 12:30 on the clock, West Coast Baptist senior Seth Hanna hit a shot from three-point range to tie the game at 60 apiece. White answered with his own three-pointer, followed by a couple of layups from Foldes and junior Brandon Chan to give Chapman a five-point lead.

The final 10 minutes of the game was all Panther action as Chapman built up to its final 13-point lead. The Eagles pulled within three with just under five minutes to play, but junior Thomas Doyle went on a six-point run to help the Panthers run away with the 93-80 victory.

Freshman Sam Barela dished out six assists in the effort while Doyle tallied four assists and four steals. The Panthers shot 72.0 percent from the field, holding the Eagles to just 52.9 percent from the same range.

Chapman takes the week off before heading to UC Santa Cruz for a pair of games against Lewis and Clark and the Banana Slugs. The Panthers return to Hutton Sports Center on Saturday, Dec. 28 to take on Bethesda at 5 p.m.
