Pair of double-doubles closes out 2019 with ninth straight win
ORANGE, Calif. – A double dose of double-doubles highlighted a 2019-ending victory for the Chapman University men's basketball team. Freshman Sam Barela and sophomore Alex Rogat each posted double-doubles to lead the Panthers (9-1) to an 88-74 win over visiting Bethesda.
Barela dished out 13 assists in the win for the first 10-assist game at Chapman since 2015. He also scored 10 points for his first career double-double. Rogat led the Panthers with 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Junior Hayden Moore knocked down six threes on his way to a 22-point effort.
The Panthers built an early lead but watched as the Flames came back for a 37-31 halftime lead. Amar Ross scored 13 of his 28 points in the first half to lead Bethesda. The Flames shut down Chapman late in the first half, holding the Panthers to just four points over the final four minutes. An 8-1 run over the last 3:19 gave Bethesda the lead at the break.
Chapman didn't wait long to respond in the second half. A 14-0 run over the first three-plus minutes quickly turned the deficit into an eight-point lead. The lead grew into double digits over the next three minutes and grew to as much as a 21-point lead near the midway point of the second half. Bethesda made a late run but could not erase the sizeable Chapman lead.
Barela dished out 10 of his 13 assists in the second half and Moore scored 16 of his 22 points in the final 20 minutes to lead the Panthers' charge out the locker room. Chapman outscored Bethesda 57-37 to extend its winning streak to eight games.
The victory closes out the 2019 portion of the schedule for Chapman as well as its non-conference slate. The Panthers are back home on Saturday to take on the defending SCIAC champions Pomona-Pitzer at 2 p.m. in the first game of a SCIAC doubleheader.
