Moore has career night in win over Cal Lutheran
ORANGE, Calif. – A career night from junior Hayden Moore led the Chapman University men's basketball team to a 63-43 win over visiting Cal Lutheran on Wednesday. Moore poured in 27 points – all behind the three-point line.
Both teams locked in a defensive struggle in the first half with the score 26-24 going into the locker room. Moore put up 10 three-point tries in the opening 20 minutes and made four to lead everyone with 12 points.
He caught fire in the second half as he knocked down 5-of-7 three-pointers to finish the night with nine triples and a career-best 27 points. Behind Moore's hot shooting, the Panthers shot 51.9 percent as a team in the second half while the defense continued to lock down Cal Lutheran.
The Kingsmen managed just 19 points in the second half on 40 percent shooting with eight turnovers. With the score 31-29 and just over 16 minutes left in the game, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run in a three-minute window to open up the first double digit lead of the game. Junior John Besse scored four points during the crucial run with Moore also hitting a three.
Cal Lutheran fought back to make it a six-point game near the midway point of the second half but managed just five points over the final 10 minutes. As the Kingsmen struggled, the Panthers pulled away and ended the game on a 19-5 run.
Moore was the only Panther in double figures although junior Chandler White had six points, eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Alex Rogat also had eight rebounds to go with his seven points. The Panthers crushed Cal Lutheran on the boards with a 42-25 advantage and scored 17 points off 14 Cal Lutheran turnovers.
The Panthers are back at home on Saturday to take on Whittier at 2 p.m. in the first game of a SCIAC doubleheader. The women's game between Whittier and Chapman will tipoff at 4 p.m.
