Moore's 10 threes lift men's basketball over La Sierra

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Hayden Moore drained 10 three-pointers to fuel a 95-72 win over visiting La Sierra on Wednesday. Moore hit seven of those threes in the second half as the Panthers improved to 7-1 on the season.

Moore was just one three-point shot shy of the Chapman record set in 2003 by Landon Lewis in a three overtime game at Redlands. He is just the second Chapman player to hit double digits in three-pointers made in a single game and the first Chapman player to score 30 points since Cam Haslam in 2019. He is one of just seven players to make at least 10 three-pointers in a game this season.

With Moore catching fire beyond the arc, Chapman made 20-of-37 three-point shots – just one make and one attempt short of tyin both school records. It is just the second time in Chapman's Division III history with 20 made three-pointers, trailing only the 21 three-pointers made in 2002 against Life Bible College. The Panthers are just one of 19 teams to sink at least 20 threes in a game in Division III this season.

The Panthers and Golden Eagles were close throughout the first half. Senior Daniel Foldes was fouled on a put back attempt with just under one second remaining and sunk both free throws to put Chapman up 37-34 at halftime. Neither team had led by more than five points through the first 20 minutes.

Moore was 2-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half while senior Anthony Smith led the way with three three-pointers for nine points. Senior Anthony Giomi also had nine points and another one of Chapman's eight threes in the opening half.

Smith ended the game with 13 points while Giomi had 11 points and seven rebounds. Moore scored 24 of his game-high 30 points in the second half and contributed seven rebounds. Ben Grant had nine assists off the bench with seven points.

Three minutes into the second half, the Panthers were down 44-42 after a Michael Morrissey layup put La Sierra in front. Deandro Worrell gave La Sierra its biggest lead of the night with a layup to make it 46-42 with 15:56 to go. Enter Hayden Moore.

Moore sunk his first three-pointer of the second half to bring Chapman back within one and knocked down a second one less than 30 seconds later to put the Panthers back in front. Back-to-back threes from Moore and Nathan Williams made it an eight-point lead.

The Panthers continued to take control when Jacob Mata hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to 71-58 with 8:15 to go. La Sierra answered with a 9-0 run to climb back into the game over the next two minutes. Jack Roggin ended the run when he dropped in a layup as he was fouled and put the lead back to six points at 73-67.

Moore drained four more three-pointers in the final 5:04 of the game and Roggin added a three of his own as the lead quickly ballooned back to double digits and up to 21 points on Moore's final three with 47 seconds to go. Over the final six minutes, the Panthers sprinted ahead and closed the game on a 22-5 run.

Chapman shot 46.5 percent on the night but was 54 percent from long range. La Sierra was led by 16 points from DJ Everage and shot 50.8 percent on the night. However, the Golden Eagles made just 4-of-14 three-point attempts.

The Panthers are back in action on Saturday against West Coast Baptist at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Hutton Sports Center.
