Men's basketball drops SCIAC game to Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – An early lead faded by halftime and the Chapman University men's basketball team fell 86-77 to visiting Redlands. Sophomore Blakeley Stoughton led the Panthers with 21 points.

The Panthers came out dominant in the opening minutes. After the first five minutes, Chapman was up 15-6 on a three-pointer from Jack Roggin. Roggin went on to score 18 points with five steals and three assists. The lead continued to grow over the next few minutes as Chapman finished off a 12-0 run when Anthony Smith found Stoughton for an easy layup and a 20-6 lead.

Chapman had its greatest lead with 11:50 to play in the first but fast-paced Bulldogs had the lead sliced down to just five points three minutes later. Cameron Brown drained a three-pointer and threw down a game-tying dunk, followed by a go-ahead bucket from Colin McCarthy to finish off a 22-6 run in less than six minutes.

The teams went back-and-forth for a few minutes but the Bulldogs pulled ahead 44-38 before Kyle Lewis drained a three at the halftime buzzer to make it a three-point halftime deficit for Chapman.

The Bulldogs quickly regained the momentum in the second half and scored the first 13 points of the second half for their biggest lead of the night at 57-41. Chapman fought its way back and trailed by only five when Roggin drove in for a layup with 45 seconds left but that's as close as the Panthers would get as Redlands hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Jake Heberle had 14 points and seven rebounds while Smith six points, seven rebounds and five assists off the bench. Daniel Foldes had three blocks early in the game and finished with four assists and six rebounds to go along with five points.

The Panthers fell to 7-7 on the season and 1-5 in the SCIAC. They return home on Saturday to face Occidental at 4 p.m. before a three-game road trip that last through the end of January.
