Men's soccer trio earns All-West Region awards

A trio of Chapman University men’s soccer players have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-West Region team for 2010. Senior D Cody Mansfield and freshman F Nick Echeverry were named to the second team, while sophomore F Mauricio Alfonso earned third team honors.

Coming off a third consecutive winning season, the Chapman University men’s soccer team had six players named to the 2010 Division III All-Independent team as selected by the Association of Division III Independents on Tuesday. Three of the six are defenders, led by senior GK Tyler Hadzinsky who received the Panthers’ highest honor being named Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

The Chapman University men’s soccer team made a statement for playoff consideration in its season finale Friday night by defeating the No. 9-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Wisconsin-Whitewater, 1-0 at Wilson Field. The Panthers improve to 10-7-2 and hand the Warhawks just their second loss of the season.

Despite out-shooting its opponent 27-6, the Chapman University men’s soccer team could only manage a 2-2 tie against visiting Bethesda Christian University on Monday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers could not avenge a 3-2 loss to Bethesda earlier this month and fell to 3-1-2 at home this season with two matches remaining.

Chapman University and the Donald P. Kennedy Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its annual Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony and banquet on Saturday, October 2. Two of Chapman’s all-time greats will be enshrined: men’s soccer All-American Craig Bennett ’96 and men’s golf pioneer and former PGA professional Sandy Galbraith ’69.
