Men's soccer plays through rain for fourth straight win

ORANGE, Calif. – For the first time this season, the Chapman University men's soccer team braved the elements, playing through rain to earn a 1-0 win over the La Verne Leopards at Wilson Field on Wednesday. The victory marked the Panthers' fourth straight conference win and their third straight shutout.

Last week's SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week, senior F Nick Echeverry put the Panthers (7-4-2, 5-3-1 SCIAC) on the board early, netting his eighth goal on the season in the 21st minute off an assist from freshman M Sam Rudich. Echeverry has scored a goal in each match during Chapman's four game winning streak.

Echeverry's goal held up as the Leopards put up a strong effort, outshooting the Panthers 16-15, but GK Nick Berardi made six saves as the Panthers settled the season series at one game a piece.

Berardi, who recorded his fourth shutout on Wednesday, has not allowed a goal in over 313 minutes, shutting out both Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental before blanking La Verne on Wednesday.

Currently residing in the fifth spot in the SCIAC standings, Chapman will have an opportunity to face the two teams it is chasing over the next 10 days. The Panthers will return to the pitch on Saturday when they play host to the fourth-place Claremont-M-S Stags at 7 p.m. and will head to Cal Lutheran on Oct. 19 for a 7:30 showdown with the third-place Kingsmen.
