Slugs defense shuts down Panther offense 2-0

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team lost their second non-conference game of the season 2-0 to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at Wilson Field. The second-place Panthers are now 8-6-2 overall and 8-4-2 in SCIAC.

The Banana Slugs jumped on the board first scoring in the 27th minute to take the lead 1-0 over the Panthers. Senior F Neal Hetzel dribbled up the middle past freshman M Lorenzo Belassen to score the game-winning goal from about 10 yards out on junior GK Nick Berardi. Berardi recorded two saves in the first half but his season record fell to 7-4-2 with Saturday's loss.

Junior M Boston Kimmel led the Panther offense with two shots, missing just high in the 36th minute allowing the Slugs to keep the lead 1-0 at the end of the first half.

UC Santa Cruz extended the score 2-0 over Chapman in the second half when senior F Zachary Hummel dribbled down the right hand side of the field past sophomore D Connor Tobia to score on freshman GK Matt Deemer. Deemer made his first career-appearance on Saturday recording one save in 24 minutes of play.

The Panthers were out shot by the Slugs 7-5 in the match. UC Santa Cruz defense was led by senior GK David Vivian who recorded his ninth shutout of the season with Saturday's victory.

Chapman will return to conference play on Wednesday Oct. 29 for their Senior Game to face off against SCIAC rival Occidental College at 4 p.m. at Wilson Field. Earlier this season the third-place Tigers (11-4-1 overall, 8-4-1 SCIAC) defeated the Panthers 6-4 at Occidental.
