Panthers clinch SCIAC Postseason Tournament berth on 'Senior Day'

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team clinched a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the second year in a row after defeating Occidental College 1-0 on Wednesday night at Wilson Field. The Panthers (9-4-2 SCIAC, 9-6-2 overall) are now tied with Pomona-Pitzer (9-4-2 SCIAC, 11-5-2 overall) for second-place in SCIAC with one match left in regular season play.  

The Panthers jumped out ahead early scoring in the 17th minute of the match to take the lead 1-0 when sophomore M Daniel Malikyar scored Chapman's only goal of the night off an assist from sophomore M Marco Saglimbeni. Malikyar recorded his second goal of the season and first game-winning goal of his career on Wednesday night.

The Tigers were unable to answer back in 90 minutes of play taking only two shots on goal while allowing the Panthers to take eight. The Chapman defense was led by junior GK Nick Berardi who recorded two saves and his third shutout of the season on Wednesday. The junior improved his record to 7-4-2 with the victory over Occidental.

Leading the seniors on the field in their last regular home match of the season was senior F Gabe Recht-Appel who recorded a season-high of four shots on goal against the Tigers. Senior M Anthony Fernandez also recorded three shots, including a header in the 60th minute that missed just high.  

The second-place Panthers will travel to Cal Lutheran (5-9-4 overall, 4-8-3 SCIAC) on Saturday Nov. 1 to play their last game of the regular season at 7 p.m. at William Rolland Stadium.
