Aggressive offense leads to Panther win over Stags

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team defeated fourth-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-1 on Saturday morning at Wilson Field. The Panthers (5-4-3 overall, 4-3-1 SCIAC) move into fourth place in SCIAC with Saturday's victory.

Three minutes into the first half junior M Jake Sarmiento launched a shot from 35-yards out to find net and give Chapman the 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later the Panthers scored again when sophomore M Elliot Braund struck post ricocheting the ball to the back of the net to give Chapman the 2-0 lead.

Claremont battled in the second half with senior Hogan Marhoefer putting the Stags on the board with a header off the corner cross from junior Michael Crowley to tighten the score 2-1.

The Panthers came out aggressive in the first half and outshot the Stags 8-2 and continued with a high-energy offense in the second half to out-shoot Claremont 16-6. Senior GK Nick Berardi recorded his first win of the season with three saves.

Chapman will take its next two matches to the road beginning with La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. followed by Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7p.m.
