Rudich's PK holds up for 1-0 win over Whitman

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Sam Rudich drove in a penalty kick early in the first half and that was all the Chapman University men's soccer team needed for the 1-0 win over visiting Whitman College. The Panthers posted their second clean sheet in as many matches to start the season.

Chapman (2-0) held the majority of the possession in the first half and narrowly missed finding the net on several strong attacks. The nearly constant pressure finally broke through at the 21:40 mark when junior Grant Fremmerlid was taken down in the box for a penalty kick.

Rudich calmly stepped up and drove in the PK just under the crossbar for the only goal of the match. The Panthers held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half and a 16-10 advantage over the full 90 minutes. Junior Elliott Braund came close to his first goal of the season but sent a header just wide of the post in the first half.

Sean Augustine and Matt Deemer split time in goal to post the second shutout of the season for the Panthers. Augustine didn't face a shot on frame but Deemer made four saves in the second half to keep the lead for Chapman.

The SCIAC season begins next week for the title-seeking Panthers. First up, Chapman heads to La Verne for a SCIAC semifinal rematch on Wednesday and returns home to host Occidental on Saturday.
