Men's soccer comes from behind for 2-1 win over CMS

ORANGE, Calif. – Two first half goals secured a big win 2-1 come-from-behind win for the Chapman University men's soccer team over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Wilson Field. Senior Daniel Malikyar scored his first goal of the season in the win.

The Panthers (7-3-1, 4-3-1 SCIAC) secured a much needed conference win as they finish up the first round through SCIAC play. CMS (7-3, 5-3 SCIAC) took the initial lead as Mehron Abdi converted a penalty kick just under four minutes into the contest.

Malikyar brought the Panthers even when he settled a ball at the top of the 18 yard box and drilled a shot to the lower left corner at the 28:13 mark. Just 10 minutes later, Chapman struck again. Junior Elliott Braund made a run toward the goal. He touched the ball once before a defender attempted a clearance. However, his clearance shot back into the net for an own goal for a 2-1 Chapman lead.

Neither team was able to hit the netting in the second half despite Chapman firing off nine shots to CMS' five. Junior Sean Augustine made five of his seven saves in the second half to keep the Panthers out in front.

The match was marred by a dozen cards as the final 10 minutes were played 10-on-10. Chapman was able to earn a corner with a little more space on the field and took a couple shots but neither team was able to take advantage of the extra space as Chapman held on for the win.

Chapman returns to Wilson Field on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match with Cal Lutheran.
