Augustine anchors Panthers in draw with Cal Lu

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Cal Lutheran at Wilson Field on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Sean Augustine headed the Panther defense with four diving saves to help the Panthers earn the tie.

The Panthers took an early lead 15 minutes into the match when senior Sam Rudich capitalized on a costly Kingsmen handball. Rudich scored on a penalty kick less than 10 yards out lifting Chapman to an early 1-0 lead.

Twenty minutes later junior Marco Saglimbeni dribbled down the right side and passed to an open freshman Ryan Onart. Onart had a soft one touch cross to senior Daniel Malikyar who struck the back of the net to lift the Panthers to a 2-0 lead.

Trailing 2-0, the Kingsmen scored 20 minutes into the second half when Cristian Guzman passed in to Diego Ortega who hit net from 15 yards out to help Cal Lutheran to a 2-1 score. Augustine almost knocked the ball out, getting one hand on the ball, in a diving attempt to prevent the goal and preserve the Panthers 2-0 lead.

With 6:23 left in the match, the Kingsmen earned a penalty kick off a Panther handball which allowed Andres Mendoza to score and tie the match 2-2. Cal Lu and Chapman went on to play two additional ten minute periods to end in a draw.

Augustine finished the match with six saves on the night, moving his record to 7-2-2.

The Panthers travel to Whittier for their next match on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Chapman needs a win on Saturday in order to stay in the hunt for a spot in the SCIAC playoffs as teams three through seven in conference are separated by just four points.
