Men’s soccer draws 1-1 in home-opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw against Pomona-Pitzer in its 2017 season home opener Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Ryan Onart led the offense for the Panthers, scoring their only goal of the match.

After a scoreless first half, the Sagehens were the first to get on the board with a goal from junior Aidan Ferrer just 17 seconds into the second half. The streaking forward was assisted by senior Ethan Flor, who found Ferrer open in front of the goal.

Chapman did not let their heads down, striking right back less than two minutes later. Onart tallied his first goal of the season with a cheeky back-heel goal off a cross from sophomore Rhey Gill.

The Panthers entered the first overtime having outshot the Sagehens 9-2 in the second half, but could not find the back of the net in either overtime period. After 110 minutes of play, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Freshman goalkeeper Gianluca Torgerson saw his first game and start as a Panther, recording three saves and allowing one goal.

Chapman returns home to Wilson Field on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. as they take on Cal Lutheran in another SCIAC match.
