Men's soccer falls to No. 17 CMS in overtime

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in overtime on Wednesday. Junior Jarod Matteoni scored the Panthers' goal while sophomore Chandler Siemonsma made five saves.

CMS had not allowed a goal all season through its first nine matches. The Panthers were hunting for the goal early, firing off seven first half shots. Three of those found their way on goal but Jacob Mays kept the ball out of the net with three saves.

Both teams had chances early in the second half but Chapman finally cracked the scoreboard in the 66th minute. After senior Javier Bernaldo's corner kick, the Stags swept the ball out. Chapman gathered the clearance and came right back on the attack. Bernaldo sent a cross into the six-yard box where Matteoni rose up and headed home the goal to put Chapman up 1-0.

CMS immediately went on the offensive after the goal, forcing Siemonsma to make a save less than 30 seconds later and sending another shot over the crossbar another minute later. Luke Scanlan was able to take away possession in the 67th minute near the top of the box and touched a shot past the diving keeper to knot the match up at 1-1.

The Stags were looking for the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute but Siemonsma made the save from close range. The rebound was gathered by the Stags with Siemonsma scrambling. A second shot was turned away by junior Patrick Quinn and a third shot from the frustrated Stags attackers was sent over the bar.

Less than four minutes into the overtime, the Stags earned one of their five corners in the match. The ball bounced to the far post and was deflected in for an own goal, ending the match.

The Panthers are back on Wilson Field on Saturday at 7 p.m. to take on Pomona-Pitzer.
