Men's soccer falls to Hope International

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to the visiting Hope International University Royals earlier this afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Jason Reed was solid between the pipes in his first career match to keep the Royals scoreless in the second half.

Reed entered at halftime after HIU had put three goals on the scoreboard. The rookie made three crucial saves to keep a clean sheet through 45 minutes of play.

The Royals scored two breakaway goals within four minutes of each other to take a swift lead. The speedy Christopher Ribet broke through the back line in both instances to score a brace. In the 30th minute, the striker received a through ball on the right side, took a few dribbles and slipped it past Chapman goalkeeper Gianluca Torgerson. Less than four minutes later, Ribet repeated the move, slipping past the back line to connect on a through ball.

The Royals struck for the third and final time in the 42nd minute when junior John Mejia hit a half volley into the upper left hand corner during a scrum in the box.

Sophomore Aidan Wall had the Panthers' best chance of the match after he beat the goalkeeper on a 1 v. 1 breakaway, but a Royals defender worked his way back on defense to block Wall's shot on the goal line and preserve the shutout.

The physical match saw 28 fouls and six yellow cards, five of them going to Chapman.

The Panthers hit the road for their next four matches but return home on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. to host La Verne.
