Top and bottom, Panthers edge Oxy for first victory

ORANGE, Calif. –  With singles victories at the top and bottom of the lineup, the Chapman University men's tennis team narrowly edged visiting Occidental College 5-4 for its first victory of the season on Friday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts. Junior Alex Klein provided the clincher from the No. 6 position to break a 4-4 tie for the Panthers.

Klein rallied from a first set defeat to win in three sets 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 over the Tigers' Stephen Perkins. The clutch victory was his second in as many matches and came after Occidental had captured the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles matches to even the team score at 4-4. The junior improved to 2-0 this season.

Chapman (1-1) also got wins from its Nos. 1 and 2 players, freshman Andre Herd and sophomore Dylan Tevlin, both needed three sets to finish their opponents. Herd earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 decision over Oxy's Jeremy Shapiro. Meanwhile, Tevlin rebounded from a first set loss to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Ben Gilmor.

Herd and partner freshman Chris Williams helped the Panthers take two of three in doubles play with a convincing 8-3 win, their first of the year.
