Men's tennis home opener spoiled by Brandeis

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team dropped its home opener to Brandeis University (Mass.) 6-3 at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Friday. Brandeis controlled the overall play in the top two courts for doubles and singles in defeating the Panthers.

The match got off to an ominous start for Chapman (1-2) as the Panthers dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Judges' pair Dave Yovanoff and Ezra Bernstein defeated the Panthers 8-5, and Steven Milo and Josh Jordan followed with a 9-8 win for Brandeis.

The Panthers' No. 3 duo of sophomores Justin Thompson and Chris Williams rallied back to take their match 8-6 and improved to a perfect 3-0 this season.

Singles play was a similar story for Chapman, which claimed just two of the six courts. The Panthers' No. 1 Thompson fell to Brandeis counterpart Milo 6-0, 6-3. Jordan then handed a three-set loss to Chapman sophomore Andre Herd 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 match.

Junior Dylan Tevlin was a straight sets winner 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 match and freshman Kyle Coates rallied from one set down to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 for Chapman's only singles wins. Tevlin improved to 3-3 overall this season including a 2-1 record in team play this spring.

The Chapman men host Cal Lutheran University at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
