Chapman back in win column after singles sweep against PLU
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team swept all six of its singles matches on its way to defeating Pacific Lutheran 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The win ends a three-game skid for the Panthers.
For the second time this season, Chapman (5-7) won all of its matches in singles play, the other time being in the season-opener at Caltech. Sophomore Justin Thompson got the Panthers off on the right foot with a 6-2, 4-1 win against the Lutes' top player in Zach AhYat. Thompson now holds a 4-5 record this season as Chapman's No. 1 singles player.
Junior Dylan Tevlin got his team-high seventh win of the season with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Dan Cotton in the No. 2 position. Tevlin is now 4-3 in the No. 2 spot with a 7-8 record overall. Sophomore Andre Herd won his second match of the season, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles play, the duo of sophomore Chris Williams and Thompson continued their strong play this season with their second win in a row, and eighth win in nine outings. Tevlin and senior Alex Klein earned an 8-6 win over AhYat and Taylor Dickey in the top singles match. The lone loss of the day came as Chapman's No. 3 singles team of Herd and sophomore Kevin Smyth dropped a close one, 8-5 to Reed Gunstone and Spencer Herron.
Chapman returns to play Saturday at Redlands and then has nearly two weeks off before returning home on April 13 to take on Biola.
