Top pair wins twice but men's tennis drops two matches

ORANGE, Calif. – Brett Buford and Charlie Werman had an undefeated week at the top of the doubles lineup but the Chapman University men's tennis team fell to Bowdoin and Lewis & Clark this week.

On Tuesday, Buford and Werman accounted for the Panthers lone point in an 8-1 loss to visiting Bowdoin. Chapman's top duo won 9-8 in the No. 1 doubles spot for its second win in a row. Bowdoin took the other two doubles matches and swept all six singles matches in straight sets.

Buford and Werman nearly helped the Panthers end their skid with another win in the top doubles spot against Lewis & Clark. The duo won 8-3, followed by a 9-8 win for Chris Damion and Josh Sarsfield at No. 2. The win put Chapman's top pair at 5-5 for the season.

The Panthers took a 2-1 edge into the singles portion of the match where the Panthers and Pios both claimed a pair of straight set wins. Werman won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 and Sam Mitteldorf won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. With the No. 1 and No. 6 matches going into a third set, the Panthers were just one win away from a team victory. However, the Pios took both matches for the come-from-behind win.

With six matches already played in the last two weeks, the Panthers jump into SCIAC play on Friday with a match at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before returning home to host Occidental on Saturday at 10 a.m.
