Men's tennis splits final two home matches

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team split its final two home matches of the season, defeating Cal Lutheran 7-2 and falling 9-0 to Redlands. The win over Cal Lutheran came on Senior Day and secured the sixth seed for the Panthers in the SCIAC Tournament.

No. 15 Redlands took five singles matches in straight set and one by retirement. Charlie Werman and Brett Buford nearly pulled out a point at the top of the doubles lineup but fell 9-7 as Redlands went on to sweep on Friday.

On Saturday, the Panthers took an early edge with a pair of doubles wins and then dominated the singles matches to and the regular season on a high note. Chris Damion and Josh Sarsfield took the No. 3 doubles match 8-6 while Sam Mittledorf and Matthew Mead won by the same score at No. 2.

Buford pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and Werman breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Mittledorf and Morris each won in straight sets in the middle of the lineup while Rasmus Helms took the 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.

The sixth-seeded Panthers will head to third-seeded Redlands for the first round of the SCIAC Tournament on Friday.
