Buford, Werman make school history with All-SCIAC selections

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Brett Buford and junior Charlie Werman ended the 2016 season with All-SCIAC honors, marking the first time two Chapman players have earned the distinction in the same season. Buford became the first men's tennis student-athlete at Chapman to earn first team honors while Werman was selected to the second team.

Both Buford and Werman made Chapman history this year as both reached 48 career singles wins to break Chapman's all-time wins record. The two Panthers join Troy Akin as the only other ALL-SCIAC selection since Chapman joined the conference. Justin P. Thompson also earned Newcomer of the Year honors in 2015.

Buford played at No. 1 singles and doubles for the Panthers this year, taking on some the nation's toughest competition in the SCIAC. He was ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA West Region singles rankings after finishing the season with an 11-13 record. He went 4-3 in SCIAC matches.

Buford and Werman played together as the Panthers No. 1 doubles team, compiling a 13-11 record this year. The duo reached as high as No. 4 in West Region doubles rankings and finished the season ranked seventh in the region. The pair went 3-1 in tournament play and posted a 3-4 record in the SCIAC, which three of the top-five pairs in the region reside.

Individually, Werman posted a 15-9 record this season with a 12-7 record in dual matches to earn second team honors. He became the season at No. 3 in the lineup before moving up to the No. 2 slot. He went 7-4 at No. 2 for Chapman, including a 4-3 SCIAC record.

The Panthers finished the season with wins in three of their last four matches and a fifth-place finish in the SCIAC Tournament.
