Carter's goal lifts Chapman to 4 OT win over Vanguard

ORANGE, Calif. – A career-high five goals by sophomore 2M-D Brett Carter – including the game-winner – propelled the Chapman University men's water polo team to an 11-10 win over Vanguard University in four overtimes on Friday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center.

With 1:50 remaining in sudden death overtime, Carter scored to give Chapman its sixth win in its last seven matches. At the end of regulation, the game was tied 8-8. In the first overtime, Chapman (13-11) built a 10-8 lead on goals by Carter and freshman driver Mark Alvarado. With 39 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Vanguard sophomore utility Kyle Kim-E scored to narrow Chapman's lead to 10-9 heading into the second OT. Alvarado had three scores for the Panthers.

Vanguard (9-20) then evened the score at 10-10 in the second OT on a goal by freshman Jason Lee. With the score tied 10-10, the teams played a scoreless third overtime setting the stage for Carter in the fourth OT.

In the first quarter, Vanguard didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard with goals by junior driver Sean Little and Kim-E to take a 2-0 lead 90 seconds of the game. Carter and freshman utility Drew Moyer answered back with goals for Chapman to even the score at 2-2 with 1:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Chapman didn't get its first lead of the game until the two minute mark of the second quarter at 5-4 on a goal by senior driver David Carson. The lead lasted for less than a minute because Kim-E scored a pair of goals in the final 1:06 of the first half to give Vanguard a 6-5 lead at the break. Kim-E matched Carter with five goals on the night.

Carson's first half goal was his only score of the night, but he did have two assists which gives him 56 on the year which is a new Chapman single-season record. Vivan Suri previously held the record with 55 in 2007.

In the game there were five lead changes and six ties. Junior goalie Taylor Roszkos had 11 blocks for Chapman.
