School-record men's water polo quartet earns All-America honors
ORANGE, Calif. – Once again, a school-record number of Chapman University men's water polo players have been named to the 2011 Division III All-America team as named by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). Junior goalie Taylor Roszkos was named to the second team, while senior utility Pierre Masson, sophomore utility Brett Carter and freshman driver Mark Alvarado received honorable mentions.
Last season Chapman had three players named to the ACWPC All-America team and two players each in the 2006, '08 and '09 seasons.
Roszkos earned second team honors for the second year in a row after breaking his own single-season record with 246 saves in 2011 which ranks fifth all-time. He made at least 10 saves in a game 14 times for the Panthers and also led the team with 37 steals this season.
Offensively, Carter led the team with 55 goals, and also added 25 assists and 27 steals. This season he received an honorable mention to the All-Western Water Polo Association team. In his rookie season, Alvarado scored 48 goals – second to Carter and was second in assists with 34. Alvarado was also named to the All-WWPA Tournament team.
Rounding out the Chapman All-Americans, Masson led the team with 78 earned ejections and added 30 goals and 21 assists this past season. He has led the team in earned ejections each season since 2008.
The Panthers (15-14) went 2-1 at the Western Water Polo Association Championships in November and finished ninth place overall – tying for their best finish for the second straight year. In addition, they set the school record for most wins in a season by defeating Whittier College 7-5 in the ninth-place game for their 15th victory of the year. This was Chapman's first winning season since 2001.
