Out-numbered opportunities help Chapman defeat Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team capitalized on six out-numbered scoring opportunities and made some timely defensive stops to defeat visiting University of Redlands 12-10 at the Allred Aquatics Center on Saturday in a SCIAC matchup.

Both of Chapman junior utility Brett Carter's goals came in the fourth quarter on 6-on-5 advantages following a Redlands ejection. His second goal with 35 seconds remaining in the game gave the Panthers a 12-10 lead and was the nail in the Bulldogs' coffin after they had scored back-to-back goals to climb within a goal.

Chapman (11-13 overall, 4-1 SCIAC) scored on six of nine man advantages. Meanwhile, defensively the Panthers stopped six and allowed just one goal on the penalty kill.

Clinging to a two-goal lead with 30 seconds remaining, Panthers' senior goalie Taylor Roszkos made a save on a 5-meter penalty shot and Chapman hung on for their second victory of the year over Redlands (3-18 overall, 1-3 SCIAC). Roszkos finished with 10 blocks in the match.

Chapman jumped out to an early lead, up 4-2 early in the second thanks to a pair of goals from freshman driver James Vigeant. But Redlands came roaring back with five goals in the second quarter and took a 6-5 lead into halftime – its only lead of the game. Junior driver Clint Freeman scored two of his match-high four goals in the period to pace the Bulldogs.

A big third quarter from the Panthers – two goals each from sophomore driver Mark Alvarado and freshman utility Willis Allen – put Chapman back on top for good. Allen led the Panthers with three goals in the game.

The Panthers are currently in third place in the SCIAC standings, one game behind undefeated Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer. Chapman has yet to face either team, but will do so in the final week of the regular season, including the Panthers' home finale against Pomona on Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.
