Win over Whittier gives water polo No. 3 seed at SCIAC Championships

ORANGE, Calif. – With its 15-9 road win over Whittier College on Saturday, the Chapman University men's water polo team secured the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Men's Water Polo Championships to be hosted by Whittier from Nov. 9-11 at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.

Chapman (13-14, 6-2) finished in a tie with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC regular season standings with a 6-2 record, but CMS earned the No. 2 seed because of its 13-8 win over Chapman on Oct. 3 at the Allred Aquatics Center. As the No. 3 seed, Chapman is scheduled to play the No. 6 seed, Cal Lutheran, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9.

Saturday's win over Whittier marked Chapman's 11th win in its last 13 games. Both losses during the stretch (George Washington, Pomona-Pitzer) have come by one goal. Against Whittier, junior utility Brett Carter had a game-high six goals as Chapman led from start to finish. Carter scored three of the team's first four goals of the game as Chapman jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back, building its lead to as many as many as eight scores in the fourth quarter at 15-7. Sophomore driver Mark Alvarado added four goals for Chapman while senior goalie Taylor Roszkos had 15 saves in net.

Chapman and the eight other teams in the SCIAC Championships field are playing for the right to advance to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships which are Nov. 16-18, also hosted by Whittier. The top two teams from the SCIAC Championships advance to the WWPA Championships unless Whittier is one of the top two teams, than a third team would advance since Whittier receives an automatic bid for hosting the event.
