Chapman remains undefeated in SCIAC with ninth straight win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team – ranked No. 2 in Division III – extended its school-record winning streak to nine and remained undefeated in SCIAC play beating visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 11-6 at the Allred Pool on Saturday. The Panthers temporarily moved into sole possession of first place in the SCIAC standings with a half-game lead over Whittier and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Chapman (12-7 overall, 3-0 SCIAC) never trailed in the game, jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter as senior DR Dor Apffel scored three times in the period to put the Panthers up 3-2. Apffel would add three more assists on the day to lead the Panther offense. Each team would add just one more goal in the second, going into halftime with a 4-3 Chapman advantage.

The Panther defense was tough all day, equaling its season-low with six goals allowed. But was at its best in the third period when it held Pomona-Pitzer (5-12 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) scoreless. Meanwhile, Chapman padded its lead in the quarter scoring four goals, including a pair for senior DR Mark Alvarado, to take an 8-3 lead. Alvarado finished with three goals in the game along with freshman 2MD Jeff O'Brien who also scored three.

The win gives Panthers' Head Coach Eric Ploessel 99 career victories as the men's head coach. Chapman will attempt to get its head coach career win No. 100 on the road at Occidental College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
