Panthers defeat Bulldogs in battle for third at SCIAC Postseason Tournament

ORANGE, Calif. –The No. 3-seed Chapman University men's water polo team defeated the No.4-seed and host University of Redlands 11-10 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Aquatics Center in Redlands. The Panthers finished the season third in conference and third in the tournament for a program best.

Redlands (9-21) took the lead early when senior center David Sekula scored back-to-back goals allowing Redlands to take the lead 2-1 at the end of the first. Sekula finished the match with four goals.

After falling 6-4 at the end of the first half, Chapman (17-10) rallied to tie the game up at eight with one quarter left to play. Senior utility Jake Gross scored two goals in the beginning of third quarter to spark the rally. Junior Willis Allen and freshman Jeff O'Brien also contributed a pair of goals each during the match.

The Panthers then took the lead in the fourth quarter 11-10 with less than a minute left to play allowing them to secure the third-place victory over the Bulldogs. Senior utility Mark Alvarado finished the match with three assists and one goal. Alvarado is now tied with Austin McElvaney (2006-09) for most career assists (184) in Chapman history.
