Rally falls short as Panthers split at Sun West

ORANGE, Calif. – The 2010 Chapman University women’s softball team has already proved a knack for late-inning rallies and comebacks just 12 games into the season. On Wednesday however, another Panthers’ rally wasn’t quite enough to earn a sweep against visiting opponents Wheaton College (Ill.) and Penn State Abington at the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park. Wheaton scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and Chapman lost in a walk-off 5-4 before the Panthers beat Abington 19-0 in the final game of the day.

Game 1: Wheaton 5, Chapman 4
Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, the Panthers rallied for three runs in the inning thanks to a two-run single from sophomore C Michelle Pitts which made the deficit 4-3. Then in the seventh, pinch hitter C.C. Daly led off with a single and that run would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore DP Jayme Jarvis to tie the game.

The Thunder would push across the deciding run in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a pair of Chapman errors to win the game. Wheaton scored four unearned runs on four Panthers miscues in the game. Freshman RHP Sarah Solis was the tough-luck loser despite giving up just one hit in two innings of relief.

Chapman out-hit Wheaton 7-4 in the contest. Freshman OF Kerry Peterson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Jarvis also had a pair of singles for the Panthers.

Game 2: Chapman 19, Penn State Abington 0
No comeback necessary in this one. The Panthers scored seven times in the first inning and eight more in the third to defeat PSU Abington handily. Senior IF Dani Brown and Jarvis hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to help give Chapman a comfortable lead. Brown’s home run was a two-run shot, her first of the year.

Chapman collected 13 hits in all, including two apiece from Daly, sophomore OF Andrena Calix and freshman DP Katie Terry. Terry was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore IF Carly Foerster added a two-run double in the eight-run third inning.

Senior RHP Ally Waffle and sophomore RHP Lindsey Delamater combined on a two-hit shutout, striking out five batters. Waffle earned the victory to improve to 3-1 this season.
