Weiser leads Panthers to split with Williams

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team split with Williams College (Mass.) in a non-conference doubleheader at El Camino Park on Tuesday afternoon. Chapman fell to Williams 7-5 in Game 1, but bounced back for a walk-off 2-1 victory over the Ephs in Game 2.

Game 1: Williams 7, Chapman 5

The Panthers took the lead early in Game 1, jumping out 2-0 in the second and holding their lead until the fifth. However, timely hitting in the sixth allowed the Ephs to take the lead 7-2. Chapman battled back scoring a run in the sixth and two in the seventh but ultimately fell to Williams 7-5.

Williams six run effort was led by senior Margo Beck who homered to left center for a two-run RBI to edge the Panthers 3-2 in the sixth. The Ephs defense was led by freshman P Emma Harrington who improved to 5-2 on the mound for Williams with Tuesday's victory.

The Panther offense was led by freshman Kristen Weiser who finished Game 2-for-3. Junior Amy Serven also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI in the seventh.

Game 2: Chapman 2, Williams 1

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers rallied to defeat the Ephs 2-1 in Game 2. Capitalizing on back-to-back Williams' errors senior Taylor Cartwright singled to right field knocking in Serven to tie the game 1-1. Weiser then recorded a walk-off double to left center to give the Panthers the lead 2-1.

Williams' defense was led by junior Brooke Boovier who held the Panthers to just three hits while recording five strikeouts on the mound. Sophomore Taylor Donze led the Ephs offense finishing the game 2-for-3 at the plate.

Chapman junior Natalie Both (6-6) tossed a full 12 innings for the Panthers recording ten strike outs and allowing just one run in the Game 2.

The Panthers will return to conference play Saturday, April 4 at El Camino Park at noon, looking to avenge Whittier College who swept Chapman in a doubleheader in early March. The Panthers will then host University of Redlands in a SCIAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 10 before traveling to Occidental on Saturday, April 11.
